When you dream you may "hear" voices and "see" images. If you are just drifting off to sleep you will begin to experience this, if you have a tic or there is a loud "real" noise you make wake and all of these "voices" and "images" immediately disappear, as do dreams, and are almost immediately forgotten. It is similar to the sun coming up and drowning out the stars. Early on in my reading and exploration trying to learn more about TS, I found mention of schitzophrenia as being a companion of TS, much as OCD, ADHD, etc. though not as commen. K.C.

KC and Everyone, Lately, we’ve heard people on this newsgroup attempt to link just about every possible disorder with Tourette Syndrome, from bipolar to bad breath. Today, the disease of the hour is schizophrenia. Let’s take a look at what the research is saying about this particular topic. One researcher who has done a good deal of work in this area is Mary M. Robertson from the UK. I would guess that many of you have heard of her and her work. In an article called "Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Self-Injurious Behavior," written by Mary M. Robertson and Jessica W. Yakeley, published in the "Handbook of Tourette’s Syndrome and Related Tic and Behavioral Disorders" [edited by Roger Kurlan, Marcel Dekker, 1993], we find the following comment on page 62: "A wide variety of SIB [self-injurious behavior] is seen in such psychotic disorders as schizophrenia…. Psychosis is rare in TS patients, and is mainly associated with mental retardation. More specifically, no patients were psychotic in the large TS cohort in which SIB was common and the eye injuries were documented." The statement regarding the rarity of psychoses, which presumably includes schizophrenia in this context, because of the opening sentence of the paragraph, is backed up by two other studies conducted by Ms. Robertson. The link to mental retardation relies on two other studies conducted by other researchers. While schizophrenia has been observed and documented in four individuals with TS [ibid, p. 62], the Robertson-Yakeley article suggests that it is "rare." Not only so, but it is "mainly associated with mental retardation." That should ease the minds of parents reading this newsgroup. Anyone else know of any further research that might shed some light on this matter? Hope this helps you with your question, KC. Chuck in NJ Michael D. If it’s "classic" why have I never heard it mentioned in a.s.t before? Can you give a reference? If there’s a symptom of schizophrenia called "hearing voices" and a symptom of Tourette called "noise in head", then I definitely have "noise in head" even though most of the noise is voices. === BlessedBy2 wrote: > Randall, I’ll send you a long addendum I received from the author’s of the > Hypericum Home Page. You mean .3% not .03%. (300mg * .03% = .09mg — 300mg * .3% = .9mg) I had intended not to discuss hypericum until I had been on it longer. With question about hearing voices, I felt I needed to chime in, and since hypericum seems to be helping I wanted to mention that. I don’t want to discuss dosages yet, but I am experiencing positive results with dosages which are still rather low. BTW, how does anyone ever remember to take ADD medicine? One day recently, I went to take a hypericum capsule, and I picked up the bottle and looked at the label. Five minutes later I realized I hadn’t actually taken one — well I was sort of sure I hadn’t taken one — so I went back and picked up the bottle and looked at the label again. Five minutes later I was trying to figure out whether I had taken my hypericum, and wasn’t positive but I was pretty sure I still hadn’t take it. This time I made sure to open the bottle and look inside it, and then I was sure I hadn’t opened the bottle on the other two tries. My main TS symptom is anxiety. I feel the anxiety brought out my tics. I use Librium. I take it at night and it helps me sleep and live virtually anxiety free. I have had a kind of love-hate relationship with this drug. When I first started taking it in 1980, I was taking the wrong dosage with the wrong combination of drugs. I was taking Elavil at the same time which became problematic. I was given these drugs by a Hypnotherapist who did not know what he was doing. He told me Librium was not addictive. Unfortunatly, it is. To get to the point, I use Librium for anxiety.I take it in the evening(25mg). It is effective. I have taken it during the daytime when I was having anxiety attacks. I would take between 5 to 10mg every time I had an attack. I know there is Buspar on the market. It does not work for me. I tried it and then tried to slowly taper off the Librium and I started having anxiety again. Even though Librium is addictive, it can be used for extensive periods without building up a tolerance. In fact, I no longer have daytime anxiety attacks so I no longer have to take it in the daytime. I would suggest that you try a drug for at least 2 to 3 months and see if it works. If it doesn’t work, try another anxiety drug. Some of these drugs have underdesirable side affects. You’ll see as you experiment. It may take a year or two until you find a good effective drug combination. You might keep a daily log and follow the TS symptoms, and any drug symptoms and see if there is any improvment. Well, yes. I noticed this post before, and waited to see if someone else was going to answer it… As to your question: Are you sure that your daughter has TS? Since you describe her symptoms as anxiety and "voices in her head" I would say that it sounds more like schitzophrenia or some kind of psychosis than Tourettes. Tourette Syndrome has many different symptoms, but hearing voices is not one of them. Has she seen a Dr.? Good luck! -Karen

I think that what you are describing is the classic TS "Noise In Head" situation – It seems that a lot of people hear music (BTW – Thanks Reporter, for the Small World torture…) but other "noises" are common. They seem to be a play-back of things that we have heard during the day. >But I don’t want you to think I hear voices. Is this the condition >Viking is describing in her daughter?

Randall, I’ll send you a long addendum I received from the author’s of the Hypericum Home Page. They claim you can go to much higher doses than the recommended ones. What did you start at? I started my son at 1.8 mg hypericin (300 mg standardized to .03% hypericin two times a day), later increasing him to 2.7 mg (3 capsules) and then later again to 3.6 mg (4 capsules). At 4 capsules, he complained of headaches, so we went back to 3. When I reduce him to two, he’s in trouble with depressive symptoms within a week. All of this is within the adult range recommended by the German studies, but the author’s of the home page recommend higher doses. BUT, when I give my older son only 1 tablet, he gets a splitting headache within half an hour. YMMV

Well, I don’t want anyone to think that I hear voices, but there is a constant din in the back of my head. There’s shouting and screaming and talking and some noises. When I saw a Movment disorder specialist, his first question was "What do we need to medicate you for?". My reply was anxiety. I have random anxiety attacks. There seems to be no method or reason as to why they occur. I take Librium(at bedtime). I also am experimenting with Nicorette Gum. Nocorette seems to knock out these random anxiety attacks about 10 minutes after I start chewing a piece. Fred
