Golly! I didn’t know that there were so many tic disorders! Time to hit the library. If you have any URLs for online resources about some of these other tic disorders. . . .

Many researchers now agree that chronic tic disorders are the same as TS anyway, and now believe that even the distinction between vocal and motor tics is meaningless. (The DSM criteria might be what is used for diagnosis, but other schemes have been proposed for research.) I think there was an article on the AMA search that Josh posted … BB2

Ronnie, there are a number of folks here who fit that description. Hopefully, they will reply. And, although I don’t have a daughter with TS, I AM a "daughter with TS," albeit a rather senior one. "-) Ask anything you like. KAT in CT

Hi, Ronnie, just wanted to welcome you to ast! I’m the parent of a child with TS+, and I certainly understand your concerns about your daughter. You will find many understanding, knowledgeable people here who will be happy to answer your questions. It does sound like your daughter *could* have TS, but of course your doctor will want to eliminate the other causes of her tics/squinting, also. So at some point before an official diagnosis is made, I’d ask for a consultation with a pediatric neurologist or psychiatrist, preferably someone who is familiar with the full spectrum of tic disorders. On the other hand, your daughter’s tics are still relatively mild, so there’s no need (IMO) to rush to a diagnosis, unless the tics begin to cause a problem with your daughter’s quality of life. Most doctors will not make an offical diagnosis of Tourette’s unless the patient has been having tics for at least a year. A good source of information about Tourettte Syndrome is found on the TSA Web Page. You will also be able to get information about local resources from this page. Here is the address: Tourette Syndrome Association’s Home Page http://tsa.mgh.harvard.edu/ Another good site to check out: Tourette Syndrome — Leslie E. Packer, PhD http://www.tourettesyndrome.net Please do continue to read and post any further questions or concerns you have. And again, welcome to AST! There are several tic disorders, specifically TS, Chronic Multiple Motor Tic or Phonic Tic Disorder, Chronic Single Tic Disorder, and Transient Tic Disorder. In all but Transient Tic Disorder, the diagnostic criteria call for tics to be present for throughout a period of more than a year. Some tics may be symptoms of other diseases, such as Wilson’s disease and thyroid disorders, and those have to be ruled out before a diagnosis of a tic disorder can be made. Another cause of purposeless movements is Sydenham’s Chorea, which is a movement disorder that appears after a strep infection and may or may not be related to TS. A diagnosis of TS is made when there are multiple physical AND vocal tics lasting more than a year. A slight twitch of the head could be a nothing more than a nervous habit, and squinting could indeed be caused by not wearing glasses. Usually with tics, there would be hard, excessive or rapid blinking, or squeezing the eyes shut tight, for long periods during the day, not just squinting. Based on what you have described, it sounds a bit premature at the least for the doctor to begin talking about TS. Perhaps ask the doctor to test her thyroid function and her copper levels (the latter to rule out the very rare copper imbalance called Wilson’s disease) or test her blood for a recent strep infection. If those problems are ruled out, just watch and wait. IF she develops other kinds of tics and they happen daily over a long period of time, then it might be time to see a doctor with experience in the diagnosis and treatment of TS and other tic disorders. Contact your local TSA chapter or the national TSA office for a list of doctors with TS experience.

I just took my eight year old daughter to the doctor because of a slight twitch she has with her head. I had only noticed it earlier that day. The doctor informed me that it could possibly be tourettes. She has been squinting for awhile and I just thought that was because she should be wearing her glasses. Is there anyone with a young daugher who has been diagnosed with tourettes that has any general info to share. Ronnie
