Adderall / Wellbutrin alone

Question:

We are now off of the stimulants and take Wellbutrin.  My son is 11 1/2 years old.  His behavior and attitude have really improved but it didn’t give him the same focusing ability as Adderall/ritilin.  It also takes a couple of months to kick in for many people.  (we went off of  stimulants because after many years they weren’t working anymore and it aggravated his Tourette Syndrome tics)  We may consider stimulants with Wellbutrin the nest school year IF he has problems he can’t handle. (he starts middle school next year) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –     My son is 13 and has been much improved on adderall for the last 4 months. He still has what I consider too many periods of anger and frustration. The good news is his attentiveness and performance in school has improved greatly.     After reading here, it seems like most people who use Wellbutrin use it as a supplement to the stimulant.     Question – Does anyone have experience with replacing a stimulant with only Wellbutrin or another anti-depressant? I hate to get into a complicated medication regimen and feel if he was happier with life in general and was helped to some degree with the focusing this might be best.       Thank you for any opinions,  David

happier with life in general and was helped to some degree with the focusing this might be best. My 15yoa son takes an antidepressant (Zoloft-an SSRI) in addition to Adderall. It doesn’t create any complication since he only takes the Zoloft once per day with his breakfast.  He still takes his Adderall 3x daily (2x daily when not in school).  However, his add is pretty severe so we cannot even begin to consider him not taking a stimulant.  I think it would depend on how bad his adhd is and what type of school environment he is in.  If he will be getting the type of help he needs (close teacher to student interaction) then he may be okay.  It can’t hurt to try…you can alway go back to giving him the adderall if it doesn’t work out.
