It’s the latest medication for treating flu. Detractors claim that it might reduce the length of the flu by a mere one day, and there have been substantial numbers of negative reactions reported to FDA. Dangerous reactions, and some deaths, I believe. Proponents (the drug company, mainly), claim the reactions are ‘exaggerated’ and it might gain one as many as several days ‘off’ from flu durations. As far as I’m concerned, if I’m sick, one more day isn’t going to worth the tradeoff of taking the chance on some sort of reaction. I’m becoming fiercer and fiercer with my prejudices against some of these ‘new’ drugs that seem to be poorly tested prior to release to the general market. Relenza seems to be one of them. KAT in CT

That’s for sure.  Thanks for the info.

Ellen, are you feeling better now?  Been wondering. Lara.

Finally getting back to normal- with the help of a boost in medication, unfortunately. The knee surgery was cancelled, at least for now, so I don’t have to deal with the general anesthesia either. Thanks for thinking of me! E

Response:

No, not my precious Ellen!  You don’t deserve this! I hope your misery passes quickly.  Hopefully you don’t have important things to do today, and can try to find some outlet for relaxation, or at least an attempt at it. Get well soon, and thanks for the alert, Blurt – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Ellen wrote: > A warning and a question- > Last night I had my worst bout of TS since going on medications for it. Nothing would surprise me FOR AN INDIVDUAL, and there may only be a coincidental but convincing temporal relationship — but I’d advise others with tics to NOT avoid flu shots! Ellen, I haven’t had a flu shot in years, for just this very reason. While I don’t recall any specific increase in tics (how could I? I tic all the time anyway), I do recall getting ’sick’ a number of times, in spite of the fact that my doctors said it was impossible (fooey on them, they were WRONG). So, in spite of a history of mild asthma, I just take my chances. So far, so good. And from what I’ve seen of the latest flap on Relenza, I’m not about to get one, and am merely taking extra ’supplement precautions’ to try to avoid the flu. I am NOT recommending others do this. This is merely my own strategy. KAT in CT

Response:

Last autumn I got a flu shot and had a bad reaction to it in that I passed out and became very ill for several hours afterwards, such as vomiting and dizziness.  The doctor said it was just a "vagal" response and that it might be that I am getting older, but it was the worst yet. (I have passed out before from shots, ever since I was very young, but never had the vomiting that lasted for hours).  I also had the worst year I have ever had with tics and OCD, although I will say I did not get the flu. : ) This year I was not so eager to get one.  My immune system had been low for the past several years, so I am praying that I get through this year okay because I am too chicken to go through all that with the shot again.   (and I don’t think the doctor blames me either!  No one in that office was having any fun that day)

Ellen, I’m so sorry this has happened to you. I hope you start feeling better really soon. No, make that ‘I hope you are already feeling better!’  I kind of worry about vaccines and have worried about Raymond getting the vaccination for chicken pox for some reason. I’m not sure why, it may be an OCD type worry, because I just fear something bad will happen if he gets it. His Pediatrician doesn’t want to give it to him until *I* am off the prednisone, so I haven’t had to worry about it yet. But I will have to decide before too long because it is my understanding that chicken pox can cause more complications the older a child is. To all of you with children, have your kids had the chicken pox vaccine? Raymond hasn’t had any vaccines since being diagnosed. (He was up to date on his shots by then and is not due for any more for a few years.) jennybravo — In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends. MLKjr

Flu Vaccine Consent Form Influenza vaccine generally causes only mild side effects that occur at low frequency.  Most commonly, the reactions may be soreness of the arm at the injection site, or possibly low grade fever, chills, headache or muscle aches.  These effects usually last 24-48 hours.  Most people who receive the vaccine either have no or only mild reactions.  There is a possibility, as with any vaccine or drug, that an allergic or other serious reaction, or even death, could occur.  Moreover, untoward medical events completely unrelated to vaccine administration may occur coincidentally in the aftermath period following vaccination. Unlike the 1976 swine influenza vaccine, flu vaccines used subsequently have not been clearly associated with an increased frequency of Gullain-Barrre syndrome, which is associated with paralysis. Check with a physician if vaccination is being considered for: 1.  Children under 3 years of age. 2.  Pregnant women 3.  People allergic to eggs, chicken or chicken feathers. 4.  People sensitive to thimerosal. 5.  People who have an active neurologic disorder. 6.  People who have received another type of vaccine during the past 14 days. 7.  People with a fever, acute respiratory or other active infections or illnesses.   I have read … blah, blah, blah, .. signature.

Thanks for the link. Would have taken me hours to find it. Also want to add that my reactions to sensory input are extreme too since yesterday. Can’t stand any noise at all, or bright light. Extremely sensitive to touch and texture as well.

THIMEROSAL was the other allergy warning. Its a preservative used in the vaccine. No allergies to eggs or chicken. I was shown a disclaimer. It also mentioned a warning about anyone who may have had a reaction to something else thatsounded like a medication. Started with a T. Then there is also the warning for people with neuro disease, which lists things like MS and Guillain Barre. I’ve never had trouble in past so didn’t consider TS as a neuro Disease in that category. > I hope this passes quickly … you do sound miserable … my thoughts > are with you!  There was also a thread on MGH about this … but I never > read it, so don’t know if it contained anything helpful.

Much of tghat continues this morning, so forgive typos and grammar mistakes. Yesterday I got this years flu shot. I am wondering if this could have triggered this bout.
