It IS top priority. I can’t help much except to tell you that as far as I know, there is a higher incidence of depression in persons with tourette syndrome than in the general public, and a higher incidence of suicide and suicide attempts in persons with depression than the general public. That’s the best wording I can quickly come up with, and I’d try to be more specific, but I would not be sure I’d be accurate about it. Probably someone else here can give you more details. Blurt

Duane – Although there may have been some small relationship between the TS and the suicide attempt, suicide is not "common" in TS. Therefore, I’m sure there were many other, probably more significant, factors. I appreciate your concern about TS, but, more importantly, I think the way to help someone with TS who has made a suicide attempt is basically the same way you would help someone without TS who is in the same situation. – Vger > In article <8ug2pr$abm…@newssvr06-en0.news.prodigy.com>,

I am an outsider looking in…I am invloved in a relationship with a man who’s father has tourette’s. This is a mild case and I m not totally familiar with this disease. Recently his father took an overdose of pills in a suicide attempt. I was wondering if this is a common thing or what. I do not mean to sound ignorant and my question is probably not one of top priority but I’d like to help in any way I can. Can anyone help me??? Thanks….

Hi, I’m not an expert….just a mom, whose daughter has TS. I would offer this. My daughter did suffer with mild depression which was directly linked to her inability to accept/deal with her TS. (She is now better thank goodness). But it seems to me that most people tend to accept and deal with TS quite well, even extreme cases. Personally I don’t believe "sucicide attempt" is a common occurrence related to Tourette Syndrome. This person most likely had "something else" going on in his life which brought him to this unfortunate choice. The best way to help is to "be there" for the family. Whether they need to talk, vent their anger, frustrations, whatever….just be there and let them know you truly care. So often at times like this people don’t know what to say, so they "mistakenly" say nothing……and that’s not much help to those who are confused and hurting. Just let them know you’re there and willing to help.
