Question:

Hi,  We are new to this service on AOL.   I am a mother with a nine year old son with Tourette Syndrome.  His name is Sean.   We live in Miami, Florida and we don’t know anyone else with Tourette Syndrome.  I would like to talk to other kids with Tourette Syndrome like my son.  He is very creative and bright.  Thanks, hope to hear from some of you.  PMalloy 499

Response:

Welcome to the Tourette newsgroup. I have a 8 1/2 yr old son with Tourette’s, manic depression and ADHD. These many times occur together.  Life is an extreme challenge, but with the help of family and individual psycologica and psyciatric counseling we will make it.  Matt is also very bright with an IQ of 135, however he has learning disabilities on top of all his other problems and school is a REAL CHALLENGE! Talk to you soon, Pam

Hello, my son, Jonathan is 8 1/2 and also has TS, OCD, ADHD.  He is very bright but has trouble with socializing.  We live very far, in Spokane, WA but would be happy to correspond.  This newsgroup has been such a blessing for us and hopefully it will help you as well. Take care & welcome!! Pam in WA

Hi, Ellen here.  How’s it going, eh?  You are not alone.  THere are lots of people on this site who have tics.   You don’t feel like going out probably because you are stressed out and tired of worrying about people noticing the tics.  But YOU have a right to exist, too — tics or no tics.   Are you taking any medications?  Maybe they’re making you too sleepy. It’s a constant battle with tics.  I force myself to go out.  I don’t go to crowded places, I walk alot (exercise helps), and try to develop new interests for myself.   You are not the problem — it’s learning how to accept public ticcing from yourself, and that it’s not your fault.  I hope you have a good doctor.  There are a lot of very knowledgeable people on this talkline.  I know I have learned a lot. Take care, Ellen

Ah HA! Another of the folk with a "way with words!"  I’ve spent the last two years >virtually in bed with depression, facial tics and humming show tunes.  I really >thought I was crazy,

Nope, you ain’t crazy. You’re NORMAL…for a person with TS.  but now I know I’m just insane. Nope, not insane, either. Probably extraordinarily creative (you’ve HAD To be), witty at times, sensitive, emotional, often very lonely, and among the "nicest" people you’re REAL friends know.   And at the ripe old age >of 42, i was diagnosed with TS.

For me, it was at 38 y.o. I know several folks who were much older, as well….welcome aboard.  What works to save my sanity??? Help!!!   Okay troups, E has asked us the 64 thous dollar question. First, WHAT bothers you the most, E? NOw, be prepared for lots of good responses to your answer. And we’re glad you found us. Life’s only gonna’ get better. Promise.
