REQ: info – LC for children
Question:
My daughter’s best friend is quite overweight (age 9). She swims for a team and plays soccer so she’s not what I’d call inactive, but she is a carb addict. Her mother is curious about my new WOE and inquired about info for her and her child. I was wondering if anyone knows of any books aimed specifically at children. TIA for any responses.
Our 21-yr-old and his gf have discovered the "low fat" WOE and they have bought into it 100%. They think lo-carb is crazy. While I’m eating steaks and salads, they have pasta, salad, and mashed potatoes. Of course it works for them since they belong to a gym and go work out fairly regularly, and they avoid sugar (not other carbs) plus run around after their 3-year-old all the time. He has BF % in sub 10 and she’s sub 20. Since its working for them, and they like it, I don’t see any reason to change. Alan 244/201/180

I *think* the Hellers have something out like CAD Kids. You will likely find it in the same section as other diet books. K in Cali

There are a couple of books out there about adapting the LC lifestyle to kids, one written by the Heller’s I believer (of CAD fame) and one written by one of Dr. Atkins’ associates. I forget the titles unfortunately but you could probably find the first one at least by going to www.amazon.com and doing an author search on Heller. — Debbie Cusick I plan to be a procrastinator some day if I ever get around to it. An associate of Dr. Atkins, Dr. Fred Pescatore, has written a very good book on low-carbing for children. It’s called "Feed Your Kids Well." I ordered my copy through Amazon.com.
Thanks Arlene, I did finally find this and purchase it along with another one : Carbohydrate-Addicted Kids : Help Your Child or Teen Break Free of Junk Food and Sugar Cravings-For Life! by Rachael F. Heller, Richard Ferdinand Heller I’m looking forward to reading them both before I pass them along to my friend for her daughter. My daughter is lucky to have a high metabolism now so she looks great, but the way she craves sugar and carbs – just like me
, I cringe for her heating habits in her thirties when it just doesn’t magically disappear the next morning. I just really don’t want to make her weight an issue as there is no problem yet and young girls her age are entering a time of great enough pressure on looks. I use the word healthy a lot. I tell her I have changed the way I eat because I want to have a healthy body and live long enough to see her grow up. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. Sounds like another good one. Since you have copies of both books, please post what you think about the Heller’s book. I might want to get a copy of that one, too.

As the parent of two teenage boys, I have learned one thing – if a teen doesn’t WANT to change their eating habits, NO POWER ON EARTH will cause them to.<grin And each teen is different. My 15-year old took to low-carbing like a duck to water; my 18-year old thinks we are all nuts. (Humm…so what’s new about that, huh?
) Take comfort in the fact that you now have the knowledge to help your daughter when SHE decides it’s time to take charge of her diet – and her health. I use the word healthy a lot. I tell her I have changed the way I eat because
I want to have a healthy body and live long enough to see her grow up. Exactly my point. Your good example combined with your obvious love for her will "do the deed," I’m certain of it. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion.
Anytime, anyday! Glad I could pass the name of that book along. Back to lurking for now <g Arlene 276/248/160 —started Atkins 2/21/99 Low-Carb Diet FAQ http://www.grossweb.com/asdlc/faq.htm Learn about Tourette Syndrome: http://tsa.mgh.harvard.edu/

I am not aware of any but regardless I definitely would not suggest a ketogenic diet for a growing child. If she must diet try the Sugar Busters version as it is less austere and is not ketogenic. If you can get your kids off sugar please let me know how. Certainly there could be no ill health effects of depriving your child of Cocoa Puffs. Our 13 boy has bosoms. Too much pop and other crap. Sure they metabolixe a lot of it now bu their systems will break down when they grow up…as ours have. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am not aware of any but regardless I definitely would not suggest a ketogenic diet for a growing child. I’m no expert, but I’d think it would be more an issue of controlling the carbo-sugar binges than trying an LC diet. Might be well to restrict some carb forms and see if that doesn’t do the job, like no sugars; that should be semi-obvious. If that doesn’t do it start restricting grains, that removes the next huge impulse to overeat. I don’t see a child going obese and unhealthy on baked potatoes, corn or beans. ROn
