University Education problems
Question:
Hi all!! I was wondering if anyone has encoutered problems in accessing university education? In particular I am interested in professional school programs i.e. graduate programs, health professions, etc… I am in the midst of problems trying to get into medical school. It has nothing to do with marks but it seems that Tourettes keeps coming up as an expected problem. I use the arguement what would happen if a person entered a program then became ill, or what if I was not diagnosed until after I entered. I am in a tizzy and could use any info that could help me. I am embarking on some legal help. Many Thanks, Tabitha Rogers t…@is.dal.ca

Tabitha: Contact the National TSA. There have been a number of MDs with TS, including Dr. Morton Doran (surgeon) and Dr. Orrin Palmer (psychiatrist). I’m sure that TSA can put you in contact with these physicians who can give you support. Also, Joanne Cohen was also involved in a law suit with a college in Boston. Unfortunately she lost, but she was accepted at another university. If you persevere, you will be successful. You have a lot of friends here at ast that are behind you 100%. Gary

Tabitha, I’m not at all familiar with Canadian law – but I can’t believe that TS would be a valid (legally) reason for keeping you out of medical school. Try to contact Dr. Mort Doran – he’s a *surgeon* who has TS, and while I’m pretty sure he wasn’t diagnosed until after he finished med school, he’s been practicing for years since his diagnosis. That must count for something. Kathy Shorr, do you know how to get hold of Dr. Doran? You can try using the Canadian Charter of Rights (or whatever it is called) but I am unsure of how Canadian laws work on something like that. You may have to try being an international student or something. Hi Tabitha, You might want to write the National TS (Tourette Syndrome Foundation of Canada) Mort Doran (surgeon who lives in BC) is their executive vice-president. Mail address: 203-3675 Keele Street North York, Ontario M3J 1M6 Telephone (24 hour service) (416)636-1688 Toll Free 1-800-361-3120 TS email address in BC is toure…@pris.bc.ca I don’t know Dr. Doran’s email address, but if you have a question, it might be forwarded on to him. I would suggest you contact the National office, they can probably give you some information re education/TS/law. Good luck Tabitha, and don’t give up. Please let us know what happens. That’s the one
It seems to me that this was the sort of situation that you were telling me would come up, and that’s I’d change my mind then. I just thought I’d mention that I didn’t, that’s all. :^) –Jared in WA (And that’s not to undermine Tabitha’s plight, of course. There is certainly nothing meant personally, but since she doesn’t even know what we’re talking about (presumably), I can at least hope that she wasn’t offended.)

I got my MS in chemical physics and never had a problem with administrators. seems if they have a challenge to participation, the ADA should be brought up as a subject for discussion. loss of federal funds should get the attention of the most hardened administrator.

One little problem, It looks like this school is Canadian and I do not know how the funding laws work up there. I would hope that there is some kind of protection like this. — Louis J Bouchard Buffalo, New York lo…@localnet.com OR http://www.localnet.com/~louis High and mighty alone we are kings! ManOWar
