Question:
Remember that alt.config troll post that came through here a few weeks ago, and was hitting every newsgroup? Now he’s doing it again on many different newsgroups, where simply clicking on the message sends you into some kind of a loop and you have to cold boot. If we get a post here from kerman something mongrel something, don’t click on it … maybe someone else can find it on another newsgroup (it’s on the alt.politics groups, for example) and explain to us what it is and what to do ???? — Tourette Syndrome – Now What? http://members.home.net/tourettenowwhat

First, go to your preferences and turn off "enable Javascript for mail and news", or such. There’s no reason to use Javascript in mail and news anyway. That will keep the popup loop from executing. If you do get bit by it, just quit the program and restart it. On Macs, it’s the Command+Option+Esc keys. On Windows (if I remember correctly) it’s Control-Alt-Delete, which allows you to quit the program and restart it without rebooting. Thanks, Brad. I didn’t know you could separately disable Java for newsgroups. I found it on Netscape under: Edit Preferences Advanced Enable Java Script Enable Java Script for Mail and News > If you do get bit by it, just quit the program and > restart it. Ctrl-Alt-Delete didn’t get me out of it … it hung my computer, so I had to reboot. I tried it three times, then finally just marked the whole newsgroup read to get around that post … ??? — Tourette Syndrome – Now What? http://members.home.net/tourettenowwhat

Also, to break out of the myriad of popup windows that emerge from this sort of crap, you can turn off javascript in your browser. For example, in Netscape, you can do Edit->Preferences->Advances and uncheck "Enable Javascript." That’ll prevent propogation. Or, you could kill the process (in the Ctrl-Alt-Delte list for Win 95/98). Lots of sites use this to bolters their hit counts (x10.com is a good example) since those ads get counted as hits. -Greg G — OH MY GOD! – Joey Styles He must have found out that I FINALLY have a web page. Javascript, not Java. They are two different things. Java is generally the more dangerous, but Javascript can lock up your computer. — RB |
