Atkins Diet / No Sugar = Tourette Cure/Solution?
Question:
I am a firm believer in giving something a try if it might work. When my boys were small I tried a diet which consisted of no fruit, no starches (which converted to sugar) and obviously, no refined sugar. I also went one step further with my younger son and aggressively treated him for a proliferation of yeast (which would be caused by sugar). He took Nystatin(?) in it’s raw form. (it was awhile ago and I can hardly recall, off the cuff. What I do recall is that he took it 3x/day. Once, I tried his drink which it was mixed with and it was the worst thing I ever tasted. I couldn’t get that awful taste out of my mouth for hours. Poor kid…he took it without complaining for the longest time.)ANYWAY, for my boys, I had high hopes because initially, it seemed to make a major positive impact. This came at a time when I was still trying to "fix" the problem as opposed to "treat" it. The benefits seemed great for a brief time, then everything reverted back to where we started. I highly recommend that people try it, because maybe it will make a difference. I had a peek at success, which was encouraging. However, with my boys, the positive results were short lived. Good luck. Donna

I’m glad it’s working for you…just remember you can’t stick with no carbs forever, it’s not healthy and your mood might change, or get irritable, and all that protein is not healthy, either. The Atkins diet works but has it’s critics; some who say it only works because it’s a diet that precludes carbs/sugar which adds so many calories, so by nature cutting them out will help one lose weight. If a modified version works well for your TS and Anx. symptoms, that’s great! I am cutting out starches and wheat products for a while to see if I feel better. So far, I’m just hungry! Thanks for telling us your experiences! Good luck! Jo

hi guys… for the majority of my life, my tourettes hasn’t been much of a problem… although recently as i’m approaching my mid 20s, i’ve noticed it has escalated to a level that is majorly affecting my life on a day to day basis… causing me to avoid social situations and increase my depression and anxiety to a horrid level… I’ve tried all the medication as many of you have, and the results with all of them, were absolutely horrible.. Not only did they not help, but I soon developed an intense case of anxiety with all of them.. I then tried homeopathy for a few months, with no luck… it just kept getting worse and worse for me… doctors couldn’t help me.. and I didn’t know what to do… but I couldn’t live my life as it was any longer… as of a week ago, it seemed hopeless… I was reading the archives of this newsgroup on deja and found some posts mentioning chocolate, coffee, etc.. as food items that people try to limit.. as it can increase tics… .. and many other food items, which were all "stimulants" to the nervous system… I then thought.. well what if carbohydrates / sugar, were elliminated completely, along with all potential stimulants..? Maybe that might produce even better results.. than just avoiding those certain items.. while continuing to consume food normally… I then did a search of all the archived topics in this newsgroup since 1998 on sugar, atkins diet, etc.. and found all similar stories.. when individuals stayed away from carbohydrates / sugar, their tourettes got better… I remember I used to be on the atkins diet about a year ago, and I had no tics at all.. but didn’t think anything of it.. then I remember going on a cruise this summer and eating nothing but the sugariest deserts, breads, more carbohydryates (sugar) than I have ever eaten in my life.. and that’s when my tourettes started acting up again… I thought I had something here… So I decided to give it a try again… a few days ago, I went back on the Atkins diet… limited myself to basically no sugar/carbohydrates for the entire day… the result.. my anxiety i’ve been struggling with for MONTHS.. completely 100% gone by the end of the night.. a couple days later.. my tics.. much much better… now three days into it, i’m feeling better than I have in so long… and my tics are improving by the hour.. i’m so much more relaxed, much more calm, no anxiety, and a minimum amount of tics… every day seems to get better… and it’s only been less than 3 days with a minimum of carbohydrates.. (about 5grams a day) So I wonder if there really is a correlation between sugar/carbohydrates and tics, or if it’s just me? either way, for all of those who have tried everything, and are about to give up.. I definately suggest picking up a copy of one of the atkins book and trying it out…
