Dr. John M. Price, who is a troll in a.s.t., is likely to be re-elected moderator of sppm, even though the other candidates are MUCH better for the job. Blurt

I don’t know, I was just lashing out. I tried to figure out who was running by reading there. I guess I misunderstood. I keep feeling bad every time I get pissed at you and express it here. It takes a while to sink in, but I end up feeling bad about it. Not sure what to do about that. Would you maybe tell me on THIS newsgroup what that dev-nul newsgroup thing was about, but this time explain in terms that I might be able to understand? Blurt

I guess I : misunderstood. Not a problem. The procedure is to have the ombudsman set up a voting counter group. This is done by the ombudsman getting in touch with folk whose names the moderators had submitted for that purpose. A moderator cannot be on that group of three people. The readers/posters then submit names to the group at the email address Paul posted. Paul then sends out notices on the registration to vote, and that they were nominated for a position (if applicable). The person has to accept, of course, and agree to the job if elected. After that, Paul will post the nominations that were accepted at the beginning of the campaign period. That is 11Mar01, if memory serves. Then you will see the list of candidates. : I keep feeling bad every time I get pissed at you and express it here. : It takes a while to sink in, but I end up feeling bad about it. Not : sure what to do about that. NBD. Perhaps post, but don’t send? Then reread what you intended to put up, and delete those that you think better of. (Of course that depends on the newsreader that you have. Some can literally be used off-line to post, then sends the followups up as a batch.) I have actually done this, for both online stuff and IRL. : Would you maybe tell me on THIS newsgroup what that dev-nul newsgroup : thing was about, but this time explain in terms that I might be able to : understand? Usenet was created by people using unix, and there is a ‘device’ in unix called null. I think it is also available in DOS, but it’s been years. It literally is ‘nothing’. Really. You can copy stuff all day long to /dev/null and all that will happen is the use of CPU time, as it really does go nowhere. Now if you *move* stuff to /dev/null (it acts like a folder, too), it will disappear. Nice thing to have when you are programming procmail to get rid of spam. In keeping with the ‘concept’ of the /dev/null in unix, in usenet adding that group is an attempt to end a discussion (being moderated as it were). Seldom works of late. It was very handy in the delphi days, when Spetember meant something, etc. as it is moderated. Now people just delete it from the newsgroups line. Ahh but for the good ol’ days. — John M. Sorry, that’s too long a name. You need something like alt.support.tourette.moderation.d (which would be a real group name) or something like alt.support.tourette.moderated.boing.boing.boing, in the fine tradition of bullshit alt.group names. -Greg G — -Greg "Y2Krankor" Gershowitz To Reply: pull THE PLUG http://www.geocities.com/torcha.geo (My personal site) http://tourettic.homestead.com/ (The unofficial AST site) "Much of Twister’s footage was done in the digital domain, with 1s representing incompetence and 0s representing crap." – Mike Nelson (also applies to SW:TPM)

Well, it’s a lot easier to make a thread out of it. John Price insisted on us having our discussion in alt.config, and totally disregarded the good advice he was given by the people there. Blurt
