Josh, I knew you couldn’t read my mind "-))..however, I DID think it possible that one might be able to determine ‘lurkership’ as well as ‘membership.’ I’m not smart enough to know differently, althoug it did strike me as surprising!! No need to repost. Re; the birds: I don’t have any MP3 files on that….my grandson probably does, however! Although he’s more interested in Orks right now that birds….. "-)) KAT in CT

Interesting. While there certainly is no central repository of newsgroup members (not possible since "membership" does not even apply), it should be possible to monitor posts over time and build up a list of names. Evidently that’s what www.remarq.com does. My name was on their list, and I never use their site. I copy/pasted  the list into Word 97, saved the file as a Text file, then opened up the file in Access 97 and let Access 97 assign an automatic number to the list. It’s when I imported it into Access that the list got a bit corrupted (is that an understatement?). Apparently, when I pasted the list into Word, it didn’t understand some of the characters and concactenated some of the names. (Causing some names to be listed on the same line without spaces). so I tried to split the names into what I thought was the correct place to press return and get the proper name. But I think maybe some special characters got dropped when pasting, so I didn’t have necessarily a definite place that looked "right" to press return and get two "proper" names, instead of just one long illegible name. Then after I saved the list as a text file, I opened it in Access 97, and then again, Access dropped some of the special characters, making some of the names dissapear altogether, or shortening some names into illegible meaningless words. So again, I tried to fix the corrupted names in order for the list to read correctly, or at least look better. James

No, he can’t.  It might be possible to count the lurkers at a certain newsserver, but there is no way to know about lurkers all over the net. — RB |
