I keep running into people who are TS + AS, or people with both in the same family. It seems that for many, Asperger Syndrome is the first diagnosis and is later changed to Tourette. Asperger Syndrome is an "autism spectrum disorder"; that is, it is considered to be closely related to autism. The main difference between autism and Asperger syndrome is that with autism there is a delay in language development in the early years, whereas with Asperger there is no significant delay. Though autistics start off slowly (at least in some areas of functioning) some of them may later develop quite rapidly or they may develop unusual skills in highly specialized areas. Aside from developmental delays vs no delays, the DSM criteria for autism and Asperger are almost identical, and include: *marked impairment in the use of multiple nonverbal behaviors such as eye to eye gaze, facial expression, body postures, and gestures to regulate social interaction. *failure to develop peer relationships appropriate to developmental level [Many Asperger children are described as being more interested in interacting with adults than with other children their age.] *a lack of spontaneous seeking to share enjoyment, interests, or achievements with other people (e.g., by a lack of showing, bringing, or pointing out objects of interest to other people) *lack of social or emotional reciprocity *encompassing preoccupation with one or more stereotyped and restricted patterns of interest that is abnormal either in intensity or focus *apparently inflexible adherence to specific, nonfunctional routines or rituals *stereotyped and repetitive motor mannerisms (e.g., hand or finger flapping or twisting, or complex whole-body movements) *persistent preoccupation with parts of objects [we like to take things appart] Note that only three of the above criteria (in addition to other criteria) are required for diagnosis. Some of the criteria for Asperger seem similar to Tourette Syndrome, while some seem opposite, and I believe those of us with both can appear quite different then "pure" Touretters or Aspergerers. Sometimes reading exampls of autism and Asperger Syndrome can present a much clearer picture than the list of criteria. Though it’s a bit dated now, my favorite book on autism and Asperger Syndrome is "Autism and Asperger Syndrome" by Uta Frith, which is very informative. Perhaps someone from the autism newsgroup will post some more reading material. It seems that most, if not all, Aspergerers and high functioning autistics do not see themselves as "disordered" just because they have Asperger or autism. They often have problems associated with Asperger and autism, but otherwise it is more of a culture than a disorder. Some of us even consider many normal people to be sheep, blindly following eachother with no other motive but to be "a part of the crowd". BradHAWK

There has to be food! You can’t celebrate something without food!! If you don’t really think there was a letter then why did you even respond at all? If you don’t think there even was a letter it seems kind of pointless to even worry about it. Or is there something your not telling us? > >Did anybody here on ast suggest that you cave in to bullies? > Yes Darling – YOU did…every time you interupted a thread that you didn’t like > with > threats about "what was going to happen" if we continued telling jokes that you > didn’t care for.
If I remember right I had asked on several occassions for a little more sensitivity concerning the issue of male bashing, but you chose to completely ignore my requests. Again, I wasn’t threatening you or anyone else I was stating a fact when I said that you would not like it if someone gave you a dose of your own medicine. So far you have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that what I said was right on the money. You can’t stand it when you get force fed the same kind of treatment that you damn sure don’t mind dishing out. I’m not retaliating, I’m just giving you a dose of your own medicine. No sweetheart I haven’t. I was trying to figure out whether or not you actually had TS or just knew a friend who had it. It is becoming more and more obvious that you really don’t understand this illness as much as you would have the rest of us believe. > (Are there any other little niceties that I’ve missed out on? > If there are, I’m POSITIVE that you will let me know ASAP.)

May I ask just exactly what you have been smoking? I’m not aware that anyone has threatened physical violence against anyone. Geez, you really have gone off the deep end. I absolutely agree with you. I think this whole thing was started by a woman. Who? I don’t really know. I have my suspicions but no firm proof. The reason that I think it was instigated by a woman is that one of a womans main tricks is to not talk to you, i.e. The silent treatment. A man will usually just come right out and tell you that he will kick your ass. How were you ever to know that you were being punished > if no one is talking to you?

L, You are very possibly right. It damn sure wouldn’t be the first time that AOL or some other organization has screwed up the postings here on ast. Second, what Karen is referring to when she says that I stated that the rules of polite society do not apply to me is a bit misleading. What I said was that I really don’t care anymore what people think of me. I have put up with so much shit in my life that I have finally taken the attitude that if you like me FINE. If you don’t then that is your problem. I’ve had it with trying to change myself to please everybody else. In essence, this is what I said. Kind of puts it in a different light don’t it? Mark

The truth is that all that ethnic food that has been recently discussed is really gross and nobody really eats it, it’s like one of those initiation things where you try to see just how stupid people are willing to be to get accepted. Come on!!! Let’s get real!!! Nobody ever eats stuff like haggis, or asparagus, or eggplant, or… uck!…LIVER (which filters out poisons as so makes a concentrated death sandwich, and those Vienna sausages, ack!, and anything your pet eats including bugs and deceased rodents, and mushrooms, especially on pizza! (although it tastes horrible, somebody must be drinking a lot of beer or there wouldn’t be so many public restrooms at public sporting events, but beer does make any pizza taste awful) and then there’s crow, I hate eating crow…and my foot when it’s in my mouth leaves a really bad taste, I think I oughtta wash ‘em sometime… but I digress… let’s see… um…what else do people really not eat? … anything that has the word "cuisine" associated with it and comes with a dinner that costs more than $25 per person… and, um… > I have been here > longer than a large percentage of you and I will be here when you are > gone.
